5 Statement Pieces For Your Winter Wardrobe
It's finally cold here in Kansas City and I'm so excited about my Winter wardrobe! Winter is my favorite season. Cold weather = snuggling under lots of blankets, warm baths, and soups galore. And winter clothes are my favorite because who doesn't love leggings, sweaters, and warm, fuzzy socks!?
Every season I try to focus my energy on statement pieces that accent the items I already have in my closet and serve a specific purpose. In the past couple of years I've learned the importance of not just buying clothes because they are cute, but buying clothes that actually add value to my wardrobe. This usually means less is more. I opt for one or two more expensive items of clothing (from Madewell or Gap) versus five or six cheaper items of clothing (from Forever 21 or H&M).
This year, I was on the hunt for a couple of different statement items to really add to my closet.
STATEMENT PIECE #1: a vest
Puffy vest. Furry vest. Denim vest. Vests, vests, vests! Vests are in. No, not curtain-patterned-vests your grandma wears. A chic vest can add texture and fun to an otherwise boring or simple outfit. Skip the necklaces and scarves and choose a vest that compliments your wardrobe and adds something interesting to an outfit. Pair puffy vests with basic long-sleeved shirts. Wear a furry vest with a light sweater. Throw on a denim vest over a flannel. BOOM! No further accessorizing needed. Pockets are also a must-have for me, so a great vest with pockets adds more convenience and comfort to any outfit.
STATEMENT PIECE #2: great jeans
A really good pair of wow-my-butt-looks-great, I-could-wear-these-all-day-long jeans is a non-negotiable. Jeans are a staple for any season and will continue to be on my statement piece list until the end of time. Pick a wash that works well with your wardrobe. For me, that's black. I have some lighter washes, but most days I opt for black jeans and let my shirts do the talking. If you aren't spending a decent amount of money on your jeans, I'd encourage you to save your pennies for a really great pair from Baldwin, Madewell, or Citizens of Humanity. I used to buy my jeans exclusively at H&M because they were cheap and I thought they fit great. That was until I put a pair of Madewell jeans on my tush and my whole world was changed. I'm a new woman and I will never go back to cheap jeans! If you don't have a great pair of jeans for winter, hoard that Christmas money and score some after-Christmas deals on a nice pair!
STATEMENT PIECE #3: A turtleneck or mockneck sweater
Turtlenecks are IN, IN, IN! No scarf necessary because your neck is already warm *two thumbs up*. You can't go wrong with a chunky turtleneck, jeans, and boots! This is a fool-proof way to look cute literally every single day. A tight-fitting knit turtleneck is also a great option. Tuck it into high-waisted jeans and layer with a vest or cardigan for a cozy look. If you're not a fan of turtlenecks, opt for a mockneck sweater, which is a little less 90's than a turtleneck but still gets you a chic-er version of the same look.
STATEMENT PIECE #4: a flannel shirt (or five)
Suuuuper basic. No literally, basic. Flannel shirts are so versatile + are great for layering! They look great with everything and are super warm as well. You can get fancy with a Madewell or Urban Outfitters flannel or opt for a men's flannel from a thrift store to get that oversized look. Layer flannels with a leather or denim jacket. You could even wear one underneath a sweater or tuck one into some high-waisted jeans!
STATEMENT PIECE #5: A comfy and cute dress
Every girl needs a casual winter dress that she can easily toss over leggings and pair with a beanie (over day 4 hair...ladies, you know) and look like a million dollars. T-shirt dresses are a great option because they can be worn in the summer or winter and can easily be layered with cozy cardigans. Gap sells tons of long-sleeved knit dresses with pockets (GAH POCKETS!) that are sooooo comfy. I scored this adorable grey turtleneck dress from there! Sweater dresses, as always, are a top choice as well! Being a nanny, they are my favorite to grab and go in the mornings. Minimal effort, but still so cute.
Trust me, your winter wardrobe needs these pieces in it! And while you're at it, look for great layering pieces like jackets, cardigans, and basic long-sleeved tees.
