A Simple Guide To Layering

Hey there! Happy Thursday.

One of my favorite things about winter is bundling up and layering my clothes! Layering can seem pretty intimidating to the newbie, but it's actually pretty easy to get the hang of.

I love layering because it gives you versatility. It could be freezing cold outside, but a million degrees inside. The fix?? Shed that cardigan and you're good to go. Not only is layering versatile, but it also has the potential to turn an otherwise boring outfit into a super fashionable look.

If you're lost and have no idea what you're doing, fear not! OTEOTU to the rescue. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to master layering.

layering tip #1: combine textures

Think light and heavy. Pair a heavier item with something light. Throw a furry vest over a light and flowy shirt. Put a heavy knit sweater on over a gauzy tank top. Also think about different fabrics. Wear a long-sleeved knit with a denim vest. Throw a leather jacket on top of your sweatshirt.

layering tip #2: play with patterns

This is kind of tricky because it can quickly get out of hand. I'm NOT talking about flannel and paisley paired together...grooooosssss. Instead, take a simple pattern (think stripes or a small pattern) and pair it with a larger pattern (plaid or floral). For example, I love to put a black and white striped shirt underneath a flannel. It's classic, simple, and the patterns don't clash at all. As a rule of thumb, you normally want to mix patterns that have some of the same colors in them. It helps pull the outfit together.

layering tip #3: think outside the box

Take a step outside of the box and consider what you could wear under a sweater or a vest. Pull inspiration from fashion magazines and Pinterest. Spend an afternoon trying different things on and playing around with it. Layering doesn't have to be hard! Look for unexpected matches, whether it be textures, styles, patterns, or colors. One of my favorite unexpected pairs is a chunky sweater with a light turtleneck underneath. I think it's kind of a fun duo that you don't see very often!

layering tip #4: think inside the box

If all else fails, go back to the classics. You can't go wrong with a cardigan over a basic t-shirt or a button-down or flannel under your favorite sweater. Even simpler than that, just throw on a jacket and some accessories (scarf. beanie. necklace) and you're ready to roll.
